Australian Visa Conditions Database 2026: Common Conditions Explained

3 min read

Australian visa conditions are identified by four-digit condition numbers. Schedule 8 to the Migration Regulations 1994 sets out the legal text of visa conditions, while the provisions applying to a particular visa subclass determine which conditions must or may be imposed.

The Federal Register of Legislation identifies the current Migration Regulations 1994 compilation as effective from 1 July 2026. Always check the latest authorised version before relying on a condition.

Condition 8501 — adequate health insurance

Condition 8501 requires the visa holder to maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia. What counts as adequate insurance can depend on the visa and the holder's circumstances, so the condition should be read together with the visa grant and current Department guidance.

Condition 8503 — no further stay

Condition 8503 can prevent a visa holder from being granted most substantive visas while the holder remains in Australia. The Migration Regulations also contain circumstances in which waiver of a no-further-stay condition may be available. The existence of a possible waiver mechanism does not mean a waiver will be granted.

Conditions 8104 and 8105 — work restrictions

Schedule 8 contains detailed work restrictions for certain visa holders and student-related circumstances. Current legislative text includes special operation for Subclass 500 Student visas and relevant bridging visas, including a 48-hour-per-fortnight threshold in specified circumstances. The exact condition attached to the individual visa grant remains critical.

Condition 8202 — course requirements

Condition 8202 contains detailed enrolment and course requirements. Its operation differs depending on the type of student, course and other circumstances. A short summary should never replace checking the full legislative text and the visa holder's grant notice.

How to use this database

This pillar page will become the index for individual condition pages. Each condition page can explain the legislation, the visa subclasses on which the condition commonly appears, practical compliance issues, and any legally available waiver or exception mechanisms where applicable.
