Australia Population Growth by State 2026: Migration and Latest ABS Data
Australia's population reached 27.8 million at 31 December 2025, but growth was not evenly distributed across the country. State and territory growth rates show where Australia's population expanded fastest during the year.

Which state grew fastest?
Western Australia recorded the fastest annual population growth to December 2025 at 2.2%. Victoria followed at 1.7%. Queensland and the Northern Territory each grew by 1.6%.
The Australian Capital Territory grew by 1.3%, New South Wales by 1.2%, South Australia by 1.0% and Tasmania by 0.5%.
Population growth in absolute numbers
Victoria added approximately 117,300 people over the year, New South Wales added about 104,600, Queensland 92,200 and Western Australia 65,500. Percentage growth and absolute growth tell different stories because the states begin with very different population sizes.
How migration fits into state population growth
International migration is only one component of population change. Interstate migration and natural increase also influence state and territory population growth. A state can therefore experience strong total growth even when one component weakens.
Nationally, net overseas migration contributed 301,000 people to population growth in the year to December 2025, while natural increase contributed 111,500.
Why this matters for migration policy
Population growth can influence state workforce needs, housing demand, infrastructure planning and the political debate around skilled and regional migration. State nomination programs also operate within different local labour-market and demographic conditions.
