Australia’s October 2026 Student Visa Changes: Who Is Affected?
Australia changed important student visa settings on 2 October 2026. If you are planning more study, hoping to include your family or considering a different education provider, the safest starting point is to separate those decisions. A course offer, permission to transfer and eligibility for a new visa are different things.
This guide explains the changes at a glance and points you to more detailed guides for each decision. Information checked on 10 October 2026.
What changed on 2 October?
The reforms affect who can lodge a Student or Student Guardian visa application in Australia and which family members may be included. There are exemptions, so the headline does not mean every student must leave Australia immediately. Home Affairs says existing Student visas are not affected by these application changes.
1. Applying for another Student visa in Australia
Many temporary visa holders must now apply offshore. Current Student visa holders also need to check whether they qualify for an onshore exemption. Do this before paying a deposit for the next course: enrolment acceptance does not decide immigration eligibility.
Practical example: a student approaching graduation receives an offer for another qualification. The questions are not simply whether the institution is reputable or whether the course starts before the visa expires. The student should identify the applicable exemption and assemble the evidence supporting it.
2. Including a partner or children
Family inclusion is a separate assessment. Being eligible to lodge your own application in Australia does not, by itself, answer whether your partner or children can be included. Existing family arrangements, the proposed application and the relevant exemption must be considered together.
Prepare a family timeline showing each person’s visa, location and previous application dates. Give the adviser the actual grant notices rather than describing everyone as being on the same visa. The distinction between the primary student and a secondary applicant can change the advice.
3. Changing education providers
ASQA confirms a temporary twelve-month transfer restriction for non-school sector students from 2 October 2026 to 30 June 2027. It concerns the principal course and replaces the previous six-month period during that window. Exceptions and provider release processes still require individual assessment.
A proposed Student visa transfer stream is a separate reform. Study Australia’s October update says its details are still being developed. Do not treat a future proposal as an application pathway currently available to you.
What should you check before spending money?
Current visa expiry date and conditions, using your grant notice and VEVO.
Original course, principal course, completion status and current provider.
Proposed qualification level and whether the course requires a new visa.
Each family member’s eligibility and location.
Whether the application must be lodged and decided offshore.
Refund and deferral terms if your immigration plan cannot proceed.
Which documents make an advice appointment useful?
Bring your passport, visa notices, Confirmation of Enrolment records, transcripts, completion letters and new course offer. If the course has been delayed, ask the institution for a dated explanation and revised completion date. For a family application, include the earlier visa applications and family grant notices.
Ask for advice tied to those documents. A useful assessment should identify the proposed pathway, what remains uncertain and what must happen before the current permission to stay ends. A generic assurance that a college has accepted other students is not a substitute.
Frequently asked questions
Does this announcement cancel my existing Student visa?
Home Affairs says the new application rules do not affect current Student visas. You still need to comply with your existing visa conditions.
Should I book flights before checking my options?
First obtain an assessment of application location, travel rights and timing. Avoid building your plan around a flight booking that assumes an exemption applies.
Can I rely on an old social media explanation?
Check its date and source. Advice describing a six-month transfer restriction or unrestricted subsequent family applications may no longer describe a new application made under the October settings.
