Subclass 445 Dependent Child Visa 2026: Adding a Child to a Partner Visa Case

2 min read

The subclass 445 Dependent Child visa is a temporary visa used when an eligible dependent child needs to be added to a parent's permanent Partner visa pathway after the parent's temporary or provisional Partner visa has already been granted.

Who can use the subclass 445?

Home Affairs states that the child must be dependent on a parent who holds a subclass 309 Partner (Provisional), subclass 820 Partner (Temporary) or subclass 445 visa. The child must generally be sponsored by the same person who sponsored or nominated the parent's permanent Partner visa application.

What the visa allows

The subclass 445 allows the child to move to or stay in Australia temporarily while the parent's permanent Partner visa application is being processed. The child can travel, study and may work while the visa remains valid, subject to the visa conditions that apply.

The child must still be added to the permanent application

Grant of the subclass 445 is not the final step. Home Affairs states that the child must then apply to be added to the parent's permanent Partner visa application before the Department decides that permanent application.

For a parent's subclass 100 application, a subclass 445 holder can be in or outside Australia when being added, subject to the relevant family-unit requirements. For a parent's subclass 801 application, Home Affairs states that the subclass 445 holder must be in Australia.
