Partner Visa Relationship Evidence Australia 2026: Financial, Household, Social and Commitment

2 min read

Australian Partner visa applications are evidence-heavy. Home Affairs does not decide a genuine relationship by looking at one joint bank statement or one photograph. It examines the relationship as a whole and commonly organises the evidence into four broad areas: financial aspects, the nature of the household, social aspects and the nature of the parties' commitment to each other.

1. Financial aspects

Useful financial evidence can include joint bank statements, a joint mortgage or lease, shared household bills, joint loans and evidence showing how the couple actually manages expenses. The strongest evidence usually shows an ongoing pattern rather than documents created shortly before lodgement.

2. Nature of the household

Household evidence can include proof of living arrangements, correspondence to the same address, statements explaining how domestic responsibilities are shared, utility accounts and evidence of joint responsibility for children.

3. Social aspects

The Department may consider whether friends, family and institutions recognise the relationship. Evidence can include joint invitations, travel, social activities, photographs across time, common friends and evidence that the couple has represented themselves publicly as partners.

Home Affairs also uses Form 888 supporting statements. The weight of any statement depends on the witness's knowledge of the relationship and the detail and credibility of the evidence.

4. Commitment to each other

Commitment evidence can include knowledge of each other's personal circumstances, communication while apart, long-term plans, wills, evidence of combining personal affairs and a detailed relationship history that explains how the relationship developed.

Consistency matters more than volume

A large upload is not automatically a strong application. Dates, addresses, travel records, relationship statements, financial records and sponsorship information should tell a consistent story. Contradictions can create credibility issues even where the relationship itself is genuine.
