Subclass 407 Training Visa Australia 2026: Sponsorship, Nomination and Training Types
The Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa for structured workplace-based occupational training or professional-development activities. It is not designed as a substitute for an ordinary ongoing employment visa.
How long can a subclass 407 visa last?
The visa can generally be granted for up to two years, with the period tied to the approved training activity and the individual grant.
Official visa page: Department of Home Affairs — Training visa subclass 407.
Sponsorship and nomination
A subclass 407 applicant normally needs an approved temporary activities sponsor and an approved nomination identifying the training program. Home Affairs notes that nomination requirements vary depending on the type and purpose of the occupational training. Different arrangements apply where the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency.
Sponsor guidance: Bringing someone to participate in temporary activities.
The three occupational training types
Home Affairs identifies three broad training categories: training required for registration; training to improve skills in an eligible occupation; and occupational training for capacity building overseas. Each category has its own nomination requirements and evidence.

Eligible occupations
Where the training is intended to improve skills in an eligible occupation, the occupation must fall within the applicable legislative occupation framework. The Department's skilled occupation list identifies subclass 407 as one of the visa programs using specified eligible occupations.

Health insurance
Condition 8501 is a mandatory condition for subclass 407. The visa holder must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia.
